Introducing our most requested feature: Bookmark Groups!
How do you improve a great service? By listening to your customers. This is exactly why we are so happy to introduce our latest feature: Bookmark Groups.

Until today you had only two ways to organize your bookmarks:
- Create separate page for every subject or occasion. For example: one for school or work, one for personal use.
- Use bookmark widgets to make links to all the sites your want to visit more often.
We thought this would be a great way to keep things nice and tidy. But clearly this wasn’t enough.
Why we added Bookmark Groups
Many users have asked us to add one additional level of organization. This is what one user wrote:
It would be really helpful to have a way of separating bookmarks inside of widgets. There are some bookmarks that I want to separate, but not completely. So if I had a list of servers, network gear, etc that I login to. I’d love to have them in one widget, but have spacers (horizontal rule) or (horizontal rule with title) so that I can have subsections in a widget.
Another user gave us this feedback:
Have you considered a way to put either a spacer or sub-heading within a list of links? For example, I have a long list of (mostly) slow cooker recipes that I’d like to group by “Italian”, “Soups”, “Mexican”, etc. A line spacer would be great, and a sub-head would be even better.
And here’s a final one we selected:
Hello! It would be nice if within each category of url links, you could add sub-categories that could be expanded with the content of the url’s, to have a greater organization of the url’s. I sent it as an idea, thank you.
So there you have it: just a tiny selection of requests from our users to add one extra layer of categorization.
And this is how our Development Team responded.
What are Bookmark Groups, really?

With this new feature, you can organize your bookmarks in Tabs or in Lists.
The Tab view gives you a more condensed overview of your bookmarks. We also feel it’s faster and easier to navigate, especially if you have a lot of bookmarks.
With the List view, you can see your bookmarks not just in the familiar listing, but you can also subdivide it. The subdivisions are collapsable at will, and you can use it also to open just the bookmarks in one group at a time.

In short: we really feel we’ve put more flexibility and efficiency at your disposal.
How does it work?
First of all, you need a PRO subscription. There are many great advantages to turning PRO (no advertisements, Broken Link Checker), and now you have another reason to take the step.
Once you’ve upgraded to PRO, you will discover a new icon in the header of your Bookmark widgets, when they are in edit mode. Just double-click the header, and you’re on your way.
To rearrange bookmarks and groups, you can use the familiar drag and drop method. And if you want to rearrange more than one bookmark at a time, you can use our new Merge function.
For more information about this feature, consult our support article.
Coming soon
These are some other new features we’re working on:
- Update import function. At this moment our import function doesn’t respect subfolders, but with our new Bookmark Groups, this will become possible.
- Update export function. For the same reason.
- Update extension. So you can save bookmarks not just to a specific widget, but also to a Group.
What do you think?
So what do you think about this new feature? Are you one of the many users who asked for this? What else would you like us to develop?
Please let us know what you think in the comments, or contact our support team in case of bugs or troubles.
Don’t hesitate but make yourself heard: you know we’re listening!

Great features! Thanks for article.
You’re welcome, July!
DONE!!!
Smart choice, Bryan. Welcome to the family!
I absolutely LOVE this so far! I’m only about this far from paying for a lifetime subscription!!!
I have a very important question first though:
It appears that the start.me website does not load as a secure page (https://). Did I miss something and is it a secure webpage?
AWESOME product!
Great to hear that you love our product, Bryan! And, to help you decide to go for that lifetime subscription, yes, start.me should absolutely load as a secure page. If you don’t see the padlock icon next to your start.me address, something’s not working the way it should. If so, please contact our support team with some details, like your system and browser. Just email them at support@start.me. They love to help you out! Oh, and here’s an image of what you should see:

I’m *really* liking this feature!! Thank you!
Question— Why is ALL-CAPS forced on the name of the groups?
You’re welcome, Mark! The All-Caps choice is made by our web designer. It should make the look and feel of Bookmark groups less cluttered and more elegant. We hope you agree!
I for one do agree! — it absolutely does look better to have the groups in all caps. Very good decision!! (in my opinion)
Wonderful!
Great feature.
I finally went for pro to have it (along removing ads).
I would love next to get a more polished and minimalist UI.
Smart choice! And did you know that with PRO you can hide several page elements like the Search bar and the Pages bar? Just go to the ME menu, and click More settings. We hope this makes your pages more minimalist and to your liking. And if you have other suggestions, please let us know!
A lot more condensed a view. I like it.
Thanks!
I love this feature. Been using Start.me for months. Recently upgraded to pro. Happy I did.
Thanks for your support, Keith!
Love this new feature, I will be using this to separate work from personal. Reuters RSS feed is not updating, is there something wrong with it?
Glad you like it! I’ve looked at the Reuters RSS feed you’ve mentioned, and there seems to be a problem on their side. I’ve forwarded your question to our support team, to see if they can find a solution. Thanks for letting us know!
Start.me just keeps getting better and better. ♥ Keep up the good work!
Will do!
This is fantastic! I already loved your service but this makes it even better than it already was.
Thank you, that’s what we were aiming for! 😉
Good job. I didn’t think these bookmarks could be better or better.
Thanks!
I am using Start.me just for 10 days, but this update give me a good reason to subscribe your application. Hopefully will be more in the future?
Great to hear this! And yes: we’ll keep on listening to our customers and improving our service. Stay tuned!
This is the best feature yet! Thank you so much!!!
Congratulations Very Good development !
Thanks!
Thanks a bunch for this. Looks awesome and my pages look significantly more structured!
We love to hear this, Hayo!
Awesome! Thank you!
You’re welcome!
This is absolutely great! Much better tools now! Great job!
Thanks a bunch, Rui!
How do you change between the List and Tab view?
Hi – In the bookmark widget settings, you can toggle if you want groups to show in one list or as tabs.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
This is exactly was hoping for and you made it even better by allowing tabs! IMO tabs are the most important element to everything I do anymore. I even use a text editor with tabs. Thanks again guys! This is great.
You’re very welcome! We love your enthusiasm!
The separator line at the top of the Bookmarks widget that provide choices of “groups” should be less jarring for the “Bookmark Groups”. Take a look at what you do for some of the News Widgets that have choices of News Links at the top that also have a separator line at the top of the widget. You will notice that the separator line is less bright (white) and hence more appealing than the stark white you are using for the separator line for this “Bookmark Groups” function. Also the blue selection color is more appealing as well as the blue color for the “groups” is not exactly the same. Matching the blue color in both cases would be more appealing. (I’ll send a suggestion with screen-shot examples since I cannot provide attachment images here)
Thanks for the feedback! We just released a new version and the Bookmark Tabs are now styled exactly the same as the News tabs. Does this work for you?
Excellent! — vast improvement by keeping things consistent by coordinating the appearance of similar functions.
This is the approach I would take before long ago retiring from programming. 🙂
Your very welcome for the feedback.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! Started using them today and it has cleaned up my start screen so much. Very well done!
Thanks a lot!
